Google has finally put AI visibility on a dashboard. On 3 June 2026 it launched the Search Console AI performance report. The temptation is to treat that one screen as a clear cut AI scoreboard, but if you do that you’ll optimise for being seen, not for being chosen. The number that proves AI visibility is working isn’t in Google’s report at all, it sits in your conversions and your branded search.

What the Search Console AI performance report gives you

First, the good news: the report is real and useful. There’s a lot of AI reporting that is just taking a small sample and then extrapolating that out to tell you the final number or firing their own queries into certain tools to see what comes back. This report covers generative AI in Search, meaning AI Overviews and AI Mode, plus AI surfaces in Discover.

Google is rolling it out to a subset of properties, so it may not be in your account yet. Check now, and check again in a few weeks if it’s missing.

The report shows impressions only, broken down by pages, countries, devices and dates. There are no clicks, no click-through rate, no average position and no queries. Google has said more metrics may come, but no date on those yet.

Why an impressions number flatters you

An impression tells you that you appeared. It does not tell you that anyone read you, clicked you or remembered you.

In an AI answer, appearing and being chosen are two very different things.

Seer Interactive found in September 2025 that organic click-through drops sharply when an AI Overview is present, on US-heavy data. Being cited inside the Overview earned around 35% more organic clicks than not being cited at all.

Ahrefs pushed the point further. In December 2025, across 863,000 keywords, it reported average click-through falling by roughly 58% for top-ranking pages once an AI Overview appeared. So a rising impressions line can be directly on top of falling visits to your site.

That’s the trap with an impressions-only view. It moves up and to the right while your actual traffic and enquiries could hold flat or drop off. If that’s the only chart in your report, you’ll celebrate exposure and miss the fact that AI kept your clicks. This is the same problem generative engine optimisation exists to solve: getting chosen, not just crawled.

The 2 numbers that proves AI search is working

Two signals tell you whether AI sent you a customer, and neither one appears in the Search Console AI performance report.

The first is AI-referral traffic that converts. In May 2026, GA4 added a native “AI Assistant” channel using the medium “ai-assistant”, which recognises ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude. When someone reads about you in an AI answer, clicks through and books, buys or enquires, that’s AI visibility turning into revenue.

The second is branded search. When more people search your name directly, AI exposure is converting into demand and memory. It’s one of the strongest leading indicators you have, and you already track it in Search Console’s standard report. If you’ve never watched it, our guide on how many people are Googling you is the place to start.

These two signals also cross-check each other. If AI-referral conversions climb while branded search holds flat, real people are acting on AI answers about you right now. If branded search rises first, awareness is building and enquiries usually follow.

Put those two together and you get a real answer: not “were we seen” but “did being seen create customers and demand”. That’s the question the impressions report can’t reach, and the one your reporting should lead with.

Build your measurement around the outcome

Rank your instruments by how close each one sits to a customer. Impressions go last, not first. Here’s the order we’d give any Australian business measuring AI visibility today.

Instrument one, and your primary scoreboard: AI-referral conversions in GA4. Track sessions from AI assistants and, more importantly, the conversions they drive. The native channel only catches ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude. So build a custom channel with a regex matching AI referrer domains, then move it above Referral. That way Perplexity and Copilot stop hiding in your referral traffic.

Roughly 50% of AI-referral sessions arrive with no referrer and land in Direct, so any GA4 figure undercounts real AI traffic. Read the trend, not the absolute number, and expect the true total to be higher.

Instrument two: branded search. Watch branded queries month on month in Search Console’s standard report. Rising branded search is your cleanest sign that AI visibility is becoming demand, and it’s free to monitor.

Instrument three, and last: the AI performance report. Use impressions as directional context for whether Google is surfacing you at all across AI Overviews and AI Mode. It’s an early-warning gauge for presence, not a measure of results. If you want the wider picture, our guide to Google’s AI Mode covers where these surfaces are heading.

Set your baseline this month

You can’t prove a lift without a starting line, so capture one now while the data is fresh.

Do four things this month.

  1. Turn on the AI performance report if you have access and note today’s impressions.
  2. Build the GA4 custom channel so no AI source hides in Referral.
  3. Record your current branded search volume.
  4. Then set your AI-referral conversions as the headline metric everyone reports against.

If you’re already investing in SEO or content, this baseline matters most to you. You’re the business most likely to surface in AI answers, so you have the most to gain from proving it pays. Review the four metrics monthly, and judge each month against your starting line.

If you’d rather not wire up the tracking yourself, that’s what we do. Our AI SEO and broader SEO work handles it for clients across Australia.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Search Console AI performance report worth turning on?

Yes, switch it on if your property has access. Just treat its impressions as directional context for AI presence, not proof that AI is winning you customers.

How do I measure AI search visibility if impressions aren’t enough?

Lead with AI-referral conversions in GA4 and rising branded search. Those show whether AI exposure is turning into demand and revenue, which impressions alone never reveal.

Why does my GA4 AI-referral traffic look low?

Because 35% to 70% of AI sessions arrive with no referrer and land in Direct. GA4 undercounts AI traffic, so read the trend rather than the absolute figure.
